Decrypting Manifestation
Stripping and decrypting the idea of manifestation, through a new lens.
Manifestation? Is that something that sends your eyeballs rolling? Something utterly ridiculous, utterly made up and utterly delusional to you? Well… it is something we are all guilty of, to a certain degree. Subconsciously, as individuals we are constantly giving in to the idea of manifestation and perhaps an alternative theory to our reality. So, how is it that manifestation affects YOU? Well, after you unravel the different meanings of manifestation, you can decide.
Manifestation refers to ‘the public display of emotion or feeling, or something theoretical made real.’ This may come as a surprise but manifestation is something in which comes into play with our everyday lives. Whether you choose to subjectively believe in it or not. Manifestation contributes to aspects of our life such as beliefs, politics, goals and our everyday living. Diving into a politics perspective, manifestation is something that still manages to be a significant factor. Whether this is done by following the words of a leader or ruler, someone given significant power who is reassuring a nation, we hang on to words of hope and reassurance even though we may be at the extreme other end. A more specific example would be Donald Trump, who advised the entire world that perhaps by injecting yourself with alcohol or bleach, you could kill coronavirus in your system. As BBC stated in their article regarding this incident, “this is not the first time that Mr Trump’s medical advice has generated controversy and criticism. He has previously hyped a malaria medication, hydroxychloroquine, despite a lack of clinical evidence it helps treat Covid-19 and some concerns it can even be detrimental.” Whilst obviously not all of us fell for this ludicrous, the people who genuinely idolize and believe every word, also believe these false manifestations of a type of ‘cure’ that Trump has invented in his head. Following Trump’s statement, brands like Dettol immediately released a warning to all, not to use their products or any disinfectants in order to kill the virus, this was warned to be fatally damaging and deadly. All of this madness and disruption was due to Trump manifesting the idea of a cure through antibacterial products. Not only do we subconsciously manifest but we partake in the manifestation of others.

The power you give manifestation mentally, can be dangerous. Power is something that can consume you and control you. Typically, manifestation is something that is referred to as a positive lifestyle, however it is rare that you hear of the downside and the trauma it can also provide you with. A psychologist expresses her concerns with manifestation and how it has affected her. “When you have someone in your family who is chronically sick and being told to manifest..it can be unhealthy. If you can convince yourself that you have control of the outcome of your life, you are immediately putting yourself in risk of being let down. Since then, I have changed my mindset and what I expect out of life, I have realized manifestation is simply a stepping stone to gaining the reality we so desperately dream about.” Manifestation can in some situations cause complications due to the abuse of power we decide to give it. In any form of manifestation, if you feel that you are able to manifest things such as your health and wealth, you are immediately putting yourself in a vulnerable category and victimising yourself. If there were to be any setbacks or implications, you would be responsible for bringing these things on yourself. Manifestation does not simply refer to making a wish and it coming true, it is a balance between finding strength within yourself and finding balance.

From an objective point of view, manifestation can be exemplified from a scientific point of view. This is shown through studies on the ‘Placebo Effect’. This is scientific evidence that proves our energy and thoughts do indeed hold power. The abracadabra journal shares an experiment they conducted on the placebo effect and how this is impactful to us. “Placebo is an important part of medical studies when testing the efficacy of different drugs or treatments. Quantum theory helps to explain the behavior of matter on an atomic and subatomic level (the smallest level of energy). It was shown through an astonishing experiment known as the Double Slit Experiment that the behavior of particles can be dramatically changed by simply observing them. They call this phenomenon the Observer Effect. This suggests that there’s potential to change our physical reality in ways that we have not fully grasped yet. The behavior of particles can be dramatically changed by simply observing them”. From an objective point of view, it is clear that due to the radical nature of theory, we have the power and influence over perhaps more than we may think. Internally and externally, our thoughts can ultimately impact our physical reality too.
On the other hand, subjectively thinking about manifestation, individually we process and perceive situations differently to one another. The way we subconsciously manifest contrasts from one another and is depending on our personal feelings and opinions. Similarly to giving manifestation too much power, it can become too personal when dealing with your feelings. One of my interviewees Claudia Karayianni, sheds light on her experience with manifestation. When asked if she was ever guilty of manifesting she explained her experience- “Well, truthfully I think we all manifest a little bit. The hard part is when you spend so much time manifesting your hopes and dreams and you are left with nothing but disappointment when it doesn’t come to life.” This is something in which I am sure we are all able to relate to, being let down after thinking our thoughts will turn into reality.
“When you spend so much time manifesting your hopes and dreams and you are left with nothing but disappointment when it doesn’t come to life.”
Claudia Karayianni

However this is a misunderstanding that often occurs with manifesting. Manifesting does not depend on just shooting out your wishes and expecting yourself to be your own fairy godmother, manifestation is a factor which contributes to our mindset, not our reality. It is a balance between finding strength within yourself and finding balance. Najlah Al Binali, a fashion student and humanitarian shares her slightly different view on how “Manifestation is not just making a vision board that we later throw in the bin and is useless to us. Manifestation is accepting the idea that the things we desire could potentially be things we could possibly achieve. It is a mindset. A mindset which I must say, helps me tackle each day. Makes me feel as if I am invincible when it comes to my desires. For many people, 2020 is over and down the drain. To me, it gave me a chance to evaluate my dreams and spiritual journey”. We hold the power when it comes to manifestation as ultimately it is in our hands how we decide it impacts our lives.
The glass is always half full or empty
It is crucial that one thing you take from this is that manifestation is something that overtime has evolved, it is a constructive part of our culture that is often misconceived. It is a misconception that we all get to live based on our own prophecies, manifestation can be used as a tool to have a positive outcome on us .Ultimately, it is supposed to be used as a tool to achieve a positive mindset, one that will push us one step closer to our full potential.
It is something that is fine to spend our energy on, understanding that it does not determine our future and reality, it simply keeps us going. We have the capability to be the master of our own emotions and to use this as a healthy useful mindset. Now, no..I am not telling you to manifest a new car for god’s sake, I am not telling you to fall into the trap of the consumer’s dream. I am simply stating that often good energy we put out into the world and ourselves, often contributes to a better outcome and way of thinking.
